What does VICCIR do?
VICCIR provides counselling and mental health services to refugees and immigrants of all ages. We also offer training and consultation to people in the wider community who work with them.
How do I know if I need counselling?
Counselling can help if you are living with anxiety, depression or the effects of traumatic experiences, finding it hard to adjust to life in Canada, or having difficulties in your relationships. If you think we may be able to help, contact us with any questions.
Do I have to be a refugee?
No. We offer our services to anyone born outside of Canada.
How much does it cost?
Fees are discussed case by case, depending on the needs and circumstances of the individual and the family. Refugee clients who meet IFHP requirements receive services at no cost during their first year of settlement.
What if I don’t speak English?
We use specially trained interpreters, and our counsellors are experienced in working with interpretation. Some of our counsellors speak other languages as well as English.
Can I come with my spouse or children?
Yes. We are happy to work with couples and families, and this is often a very helpful approach.
Who are the counsellors?
Our counsellors are qualified, experienced and registered with their professional bodies. They use a range of approaches and have considerable experience with multicultural issues.
How long will I have to wait?
Depending on demand, it may take up to four weeks for VICCIR to respond to a referral. Staff will discuss the next available step when they contact you.
How long will counselling take?
It depends on your needs and goals. A few sessions may be enough, or you may choose to continue for longer. We usually review progress together every ten sessions and decide the next steps.
Can I refer someone else?
Yes. You can share our details with friends and family, or, with the person’s permission, contact us on their behalf. Doctors, therapists, sponsorship groups and teachers often make referrals.
Can you help sponsorship groups?
Yes. We can help sponsors set boundaries, look after their own wellbeing and support newcomers with mental health concerns in culturally sensitive ways. We can also meet with your group to explain our services. Consultation costs $160 per session of 1 to 2 hours.
Can VICCIR help with immigration or sponsorship applications?
No. We provide mental health support after people arrive in Canada. We are not able to help with immigration to Canada or with refugee sponsorship.
